Maker and Remix Culture

In my first week of CEP 811 (Adapting Innovative Technologies in Education), I learned about Maker Culture. Dale Dougherty says in his TED Talk (2011),

“All of us are makers. We’re born makers. We have this ability to make things, to grasp things with our hands. We use the words like grasp metaphorically to also think about understanding things. We don’t just live, but we make. We create things.”

I also learned about Remix Culture this week. In Remix Culture, ideas are introduced, manipulated, and passed along (Lessig, 2008).

My students are part of both of these cultures. They make things, whether physically or conceptually, they manipulate those things, and they pass those things and ideas along to others. This is a natural process in trying to understand and talk about mathematics. In my video below, I reflect on how I can incorporate these cultures in my 6th grade math classroom to benefit my students.

It took me several hours to find and remix these public domain images. I had a clear picture of the message I was trying to convey, but I had a hard time finding images and videos that fit this message. After I thought I was done, I went back and edited the text a bit to more clearly articulate my ideas.
